He looked up adoringly at Cassandra, his only child. And as he has done so often, these past several months, he let out a gentle wisp of air from beneath her. His breaths upheld her, making certain she would never sink to the bottom.
If heâd had to, he would have braved the hounds of hell to protect her, and even fought the devil himself. As it so happens, he didnât have to do either. All he had to do was rebel in the halls of paradise.
Apologies
Stephanieâs Laughter
Moving, negotiating, slipping within the seams between them. They knew him not. They were aware of him not. They saw him not. How could they? They were too busy hustling and bustling about in their pathetic little lives.
They rushed to their next appointment without so much as a stare in anotherâs direction. Look at them, he thought, passing each along the city block. They were unenviable vain creatures, engrossed solely in self.
This was the height of humanity? Hah! He shouted aloud in his mind. He struggled to conceal the smile that threatened to uncover his mask of apathy. If this is all we are to be, then someone has played a cruel joke upon us all.
Thaddeus Lester hated them. He hated them all. He hated them from the suburban housewife in for a shopping trip, to the small child shuffling along beside her. He hated them from the corporate jerk off looking for his last dollar, to the fat bastard who nearly bumped him stuffing his face with a hot dog.
He hated them from the statuesque blond he wouldnât mind screwing, to the playboy looking horseâs ass walking with her. Thaddeus Lester was an equal opportunity hater. He hated them from sea to shining sea.
If he was honest with himself, and he rarely liked to be, he would say his hatred for them began the day he was rejected by Stephanie Simpson. He admired her from the shadows all through junior high.
By high school, he gathered enough courage to ask her out. She laughed in his face and called him a turd. That bitch! Looking back, he felt it was good for him. It only benefitted him to know exactly where he stood.
He cried all the way home, looking in the mirror when he got there. He was a turd, a nobody, a nothing, a nerd with no friends. He was picked on until the day he graduated. She was right. He hated her for it, but was grateful.
He now knew what he was and could allow his disdain to engulf him.
It was seven years later. The acrimony that began so long ago festered into a pot of rancid pond scum. He was a $10 an hour messenger, schlepping crap around a city full of people he couldnât stand.
He hated his job. He hated his coworkers. He hated his parents and was glad they were dead. They were to blame anyway. Their genes made him the turd that Stephanie laughed at. There were times when he could hear her guffaws as clearly as anyone talking to him.
